Was Boxer Rebellion Good for China? | No: china had to concede to foreigners. Yes: china supported western ways. Women allowed in schools, science and math was important, china economy grew. |
What is the May 4th Movement? | 1919: students protested after parts of China was given control to Japan by their own leaders. Students boycotted Japan's goods. Students wanted to change China to be more like the west (democracy, equal rights) |
Who is Mao Zedong? | A communist who escaped attacks in 1927 and the following civil war. Mao believed support comes from peasants. Mao helped peasants and many followed him. In 1949, Mao created People's Republic of China - communist. |
What is the Great Leap Forward? | Mao urged people to increase farm and industrial output. Communes (groups of villages, 25,000 people) created to work together. It failed. |
What is Four Modernizations? | Deng followed Mao as a leader. This program emphasized agriculture, industry, science and defense. China grew and lives improved. But crime grew also and wealthy got richer. |
What is the Communist Revolution? | Led by Mao and his people (Peoples Republic of China). They took over control of China. Peasants and women supported Mao: looking for better time and end to foreigners in China. |
What is free market reform? | Free markets are when people can build their businesses using foreign help and $. Foreign business can set up in China. |
