Who are the Sepoys? | Indian soldiers who were required to serve anywhere in the world. This was offensive to high-caste hindus because travel outside of India was against their religion. |
What is the Sepoy Mutiny? | The Sepoys were angry about what they were asked to do, such as travel overseas. They killed many British men, women, children. |
What is the caste system? | Castes are groups of people ranging from very high priests to lowly untouchables. You can not leave your group. |
What did the rapid increase in Indian population do? | It resulted in famines because the food supply was not available. Farms were used more for cotton and other cash crops. |
Why was there a population increase? | The British helped with better medical and farming methods. |
What is the Green Revolution? | The 1960's when improved farming, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides increased food production in developing nations. |
Who was Gandhi? | Gandhi promoted nonviolence to improve India. He wanted to give more rights to the untouchables and to end the bad treatment they get. |
What is the Salt March? | British used salt to make $.Indians could not touch it. Gandhi started a march through villages to the sea to change this. He went to the sea and touched salt - he was arrested. 1000's joined him and the world saw this. Britain gave Indians some power. |
What was partitioned? | Partitioning is dividing up. Hindus were the majority in India. Muslims were the minority. They didn't get along. In 1947 when Britain gave India independence, they quickly split the country into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan. Not well planned. |
What is the Cold War? | This is the tension between countries. Some resulted in violence. But most of the time, esp. between large countries (Soviet Union and US) there was no violence. It lasted for almost 50 years. |
How did the Cold War influence India & Pakistan? | India was supported by US. Pakistan was supported by Soviet Union. This promoted more rivalry. |
Was India a Democracy? | Yes, the government was based on Britain's government. It is the world's largest democracy. It has a federal system like the US where there is the central federal government and smaller local (like states) government. |
