Phlebotomy

Term / Definition

Phlebotomy The practice of drawing blood. Incision of a vein for the letting of blood. (collection of any type of blood specimen: venous, arterial or capillary)
Bloodletting The practice of cutting veins to start blood flow, which was intended as therapy and religious beliefs
Venesection Another word for Phlebotomy
Scarification The removal of large amounts of blood, which was done very quickly to cause fainting
Cupping Using heated glass to pull capillary blood upward
Polycythemia Over production of red blood cells
Hemochromotosis Excessive absorption and accumulation of iron
EKG Electrocardiogram
Acrocyanosis A blueness of the hands and feet caused by disturbance to the superficial veins
Anticoagulant Substance that prevents clotting
Cardiovascular Pertaining to the heart and blood vessels
Cyanosis Condition in which the skin turns bluish due to lack of oxygen in the blood
Edema Interstitial fluid trapped in tissues puffy apperance
Exudate Fluid secreted by tissue.......pus
Febrile With fever
Hematoma Collection of blood, which has been trapped in the tissue
Hemolysis Breakdown of RBC's releases hemoglobin into the plasma
