Anatomy & Physiology Terms of the Lymphatic & Immune Systems
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Lymph | nearly colorless watery fluid that circulates through lymphatic vessels. |
| Lymphatic capillaries | found in intercellular spaces throughout most of the body |
| lymphatic trunks | a convergence of lymphatic capillaries , lead to lymphatic ducts |
| right lymphatic duct | drains lymph from the right arm, the right side of the head, and the right half of the thorax into the right subclavian vein |
| thoracic duct | drains lymph from all except teh right thorax, side of head, and right arm into the left subclavian vein |
| cisterna chyli | lymphatic sac located between the abdominal aorta and L2 |
| Lymphokinesis | the movement of lymph through the body |
| skeletal muscle pump | movement of lymph as a result of contraction and relaxation of skeletal muscles |
| respiratory lymphatic pump | moves lymph upward by pressure changes in the thorax and abdomen that occur during breathing |
| Lymphocytes | type of white blood cell; comprise approximately 25% of the total WBC count |
| Bone Marrow | Structure located in hollow cavities of long bones and produces blood cells |
| Thymus | gland located posterior to the sternum, receives undeveloped T cells and matures them |
| spleen | largest lymphatic organ; stores lymphocytes, releasing them in immune responses. Also serves as a blood resrvoir |
| Macrophages | a type of WBC found in the spleen, destroy old red blood cells and harmful organisms |
| Lymph nodes | Bean-shaped structures located at intervals along lymphatic chain where lymph is cleansed and filtered |
| Inguinal nodes | lymph nodes located in the groin |
| Axillary nodes | lymph nodes located in the axillary region, or armpit |
| Cervical nodes | lymph nodes located in the neck |
| Mucosa-associated lymph tissue | a collective term to describe small groups of lymphatic tissue located along the respiratory and digestive tracts |
| Tonsils | lymphatic tissue fround in the oral cavity and pharynx |
| Peyer patches | lymphatic tissue fround in the portions of the small intestines and are also called intestinal tonsils |
| vermiform appendix | lymphatic tissue attached to the cecum of the large intestine |
| lacteals | lymphatic vessels of the small intestine which absorb digested fats |
| Immunity | he body's ability to recognize and respond to pathogens and harmful agents |
| Nonspecific immunity | innate immunity |
| Cellular Responses | involve the reactions of WBCs and plasma proteins |
| phagocytize | surround and destroy pathogens |
| Interferons | help defend against viral infections |
| Natural killer cells | "attack and kill abnormal cells |
| Inflammation | "the body's response to injury |
| SHARP | "Signs of inflammation: Swelling |
| Specific Immunity | an immune response facilitated by highly specialized lymphocytes called B cells and T cells. Also called adaptive or acquired immunity |
| B Cells | they produce antibodies (also known as immunoglobulins) |
| T Cells | protect the body by activating other immune cells |
