The spread of Islam key terms

Who are Sunni? A Sunni is a person who believes that anyone can become a caliph, as long as they are a strong supporter and good muslim.
Who are Shia? Shias are people who believe that only a person who is related to Muhammad can become a caliph.
Who was Abu Bakr? Abu Bakr was the first caliph after Muhammad's death. He was one of Muhammad's first followers.
What are Jannisarries? Christian boys from conquered towns trained to be fierce soilders and were converted to Islam
What is Esfahan? The Safavid Empire's capital. People consider it today one of the most magnificent cities.
Who was Suleyman I? Emperor of the Ottoman Empire when it had reached its cultural peak. He ruled from 1520 to 1566. He had spread the Ottoman Empire into the Meditterenanean and pushed into Europe.
Who was Omar Khayyam? A famous sufi for his poems towards sufism
What was Sufism a reaction against? Growing interest and Wordly things
What is tolerance? accepting
What two cities are the cultural and learning centers of Islam? Cordoba and Baghdad
