Actions of Skeletal Muscles

flexion decreasing the angle between 2 bones; bending a limb
extension increasing angle between 2 bones straightening out a limb
abduction movement away from the midline of the body
adduction movement towards the midline of the body
rotation circular movement around an axis
internal rotation circular movement around an axis toward the midline
external rotation circular movement around an axis away from the midline
dorsiflexion decreasing the angle of the ankle so that the foot bends backward (upward)
plantar flexion motion that extends the foot downward toward the ground
supination as applied to the hand & forearm, act of turning the palm forward, or up
pronation as applied to the hand & forearm, act of turning the palm backward, or down
