Cattle Classes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Bull | An adult male cattle beast that has its testicles. |
| TEASER BULL | A male that has had part of the spermatic cord (‘vas defrens’) removed so that it is infertile but can still mate with females. |
| Steer | A castrated male. |
| Bullock | A castrated male over 3 years of age |
| Cow | An adult female |
| Heifer | A young female before it has given birth |
| Springing cow/heifer | A female about to give birth |
| Newly calved cow/heifer | Female that has just given birth |
| Lactating | A cow that is producing milk |
| Dry cow | A cow that is not producing milk |
| Calf | A young cattle beast until it is weaned off milk |
| Nurse Cow | A female that is rearing calves |
| Suckler Cow | A female that is rearing a calf |
| Maternal Cattle | Are milking cows or nurse type cattle. They are principally bred for their milking ability |
| Production Characteristics | Are the traits in a breed that are specifically selected to increase the capability of the chosen trait |
| Beef Cattle | Meat production, animals are selected for marbling in the meat. For example: the Angus and Hereford breeds |
| Maternal sires | Sires whose major function is to sire daughters (often crossbreds) with outstanding genetic merit for reproductive and maternal traits |
| Weaner Calves | Calves that are not receiving milk |
| Store Cattle | Young stock that are not yet fattened. They can be up to 2 and 3 years old |
| R1 | These are between a weaner and one year old |
| R2 | These are between 1 year old and 2 year old and have not yet calved if female |
| Rig | An incompletely castrated male |
| Veal Calf | Are calves that are used for meat. They have only ever drunk milk |
| Bobby Calf | Refers to male or female calf that is going for meat. They are generally no more than one month old |
| Weaned | Taken off milk. The target weight is usually 75kg + |
| Terminal Sire | The offspring by these bulls usually go for slaughter |
