Who is the Caliph? a supreme political and religious leader in a Muslim government.
Who was Umayyads? a dynasty that ruled the Muslim Empire from AD 661 to 750 and later established a kingdom in al-Andalus.
What is a Sufi? a Muslim who seeks to achieve direct contact with God through mystical means.
Who was Al-Andalus? a Muslim region in what is now Spain, established in the eighth century AD
Who was Fatimid? a member of a Muslim dynasty that traced its ancestry to Muhammad’s daughter Fatima and that built an empire in North Africa, Arabia, and Syria in the 10th-12th centuries.
What is the Qur’an? the holy book of Islam
What was Hijrah? Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Yathrib (medina) in AD 622
What is Islam? A monotheistic religion that developed in Arabia in the seventh century AD
Who is Muhammad? Prophet of Islam whom Muslims recognize as Allah’s messenger to all humankind. His teachings form the basis of Islam
Who is Allah? God (an Arabic word, used mainly in Islam)
Who were the larger divison of the religion Islam? The Sunnis
What was the House of Wisdom? Calligraphy: the art of beautiful handwriting a center of learning established in Baghdad in the 800s
What was Calligraphy? the art of beautiful handwriting
What do the Sunnis and Shiits believe? The other division is distorting the religions.
What was Islam besides religion? The law.
