Alexander the Great He helped to spread the ideas of the Greeks throught the known world. He is considered one of the most succesfful military commanders in history, conquering most of the known world before his death.

Macedonia A city-state located in Northern Greece: Alexander the Great became king.
Feudalism A political system in which land was owned by the king, but held by nobles in return for their loyalty
King (Lord) The king held the high position; to maintain control of his county he needed knights and soldiers to build an army
Noble (Vassal) Nobles provided the king with knights and soldiers for his army; in return for their help and unconditional loyalty, the king gave the noble a large piece of land as a reward. But the nobles needed people to tend and take care of the land.
Serf (Peasant) Nobles gave peasants the right to work their land in exchange for the larger portion of the crops and any other income from the land. In return, the nobles would maintain order, enforce laws, and protect the peasants.
Serf (Peasant) Serfs were not free people; they were bound to the land and ould not leave without their lord's permission. But serfs were not slaves because they could not be sold away from the land.
