What is the first commandment? I am the Lord your God, you shall not have strange gods before me
What does the first commandment tell us? To believe in God alone. Out of his great love, God created us. In return, God asks us to believe in him, to love him and to honor him above all.
Who carved images of what they thought their gods looked like? People (not Israelites) who believed in multiple gods
What is the special prayer of the Israelites called? The Shema
What does "Shema" mean? hear
What prayer did Jesus pray? The Shema
Three ways how can we honor God? 1. believing in him 2. prayer 3. worship
What does prayer mean? listening and talking to God with our hearts and minds
What does worship mean? giving God thanks and praise
What is our greatest act of love and worship? the celebration of the mass
Are Mary and the saints worshipped like God? No, they are venerated (shown devotion)
How can we learn to honor God? By the example of the saints
What is Idolatry? giving worship to a creature or thing instead of God
What is another word for false god? idol
How is Mary an example of trusting God? When the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to tell her that she would give birth to the Son of God
