Apartheid | Laws in South Africa that physically separated different races into different geographic areas |
Ascribed Status | status people enter automatically without choice, usually at birth or some special event in life |
Attitudinal Discrimination | Discrimination against a group based on its existence as a group |
Balkanization | A process by which a state breaks down through conflicts among its ethnicities |
Blockbusting | process real estates convince white property owners sell houses at low prices due to fear of poc will move into neighborhood |
Centripetal force | attitude that tends to unify people and enhance support for a state |
Ethnic Cleansing | policy designed by 1 ethnic/religious group to remove by violent means the civilian population of another or ethnic group from geographic areas |
Ethnicity | identity with a group of people who share cultural traditions of a particular homeland/hearth |
Genocide | deliberate elimination of a group through mass murder |
Ghetto | neighborhood in a city set up by law to be inhabited only by jews |
Hispanic | Someone from or ancestors from a Spanish speaking country |
Institutional Discrimination | Discrimination against a group as a whole |

Nationalism | loyalty and devotion to a particular nationality |
Nationality | identity with a group of people who share legal attachment to a particular country |
Nation-State | A state whose territory corresponds to those occupied by a particular ethnicity |
Plural Society | A society with multiple ethnicities |
Prejudice | discrimination against someone based off of physiological traits |
Race | identity with a group of people who are perceived to share a physiological trait, such as skin color |
Racism | The belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits, and racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race |
Racist | A person who subscribes to the beliefs of racism |
Self-determination | Ethnic ways to govern themselves |
Sharecropper | A person who works fields rented form a landowner and pays the rent and repays loans by turning over to the landowner a share of crops |

Triangular slave trade | A practice (18th century) which European ships transported slaves from Africa to Caribbean islands, molasses from the Caribbean to Europe, and trade goods from Europe to Africa |
White flight | the phenomenon of white people moving out of urban areas, particularly those with significant minority populations, and into suburban areas. |
