what is archaeologists? a scientists who examine bones, tools, structures, and other artifacts to learn about peoples and cultures of the past.
what is migrate? To relocate; to move from one place to settle in another area.
what is nomad? a person who has no single, settled home; follows seasonal food sources.
what is domesticate? to tame animals and raise them to be used by humans for food, labor and transportation
what is Prehistory? Before history; the events in the period of time before writing was invented.
what is history? the written and other recorded events of humans; the study of man over time.
what is oral traditions? stories passed down through generations by word of mouth.
what is Old Stone Age? the early part of the Stone Age during which humans learned to hunt in groups, discovered how to use fire, and become nomads.
what is Stone Age? a period of time during which humans made tools and weapons mainly from stone; the earliest know period of human culture.
what is Neolithic? New Stone Age
what is Geography? The study of man's spatial relationship to the environment. The study of Earth's surface and the processes that shape(d)it, the connections between places, resources, and living things.
what is Smithsonian Institutaion? the world's largest muesum complex and research organization composed of 19 museum, 9 research centers, and the national zoo. Located on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
what is N.A.G.P.R.A? Native American Graves Protection & Repatriation Act- According to NAGPRA, if human remains are found on federal lands and their cultural affiliation to a Native American Tribe can be established, the affiliated tribe can claim them.
what is Kennewick Man? the name for the skeleton remains of a prehistoric man found on a bank of the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington, USA on July 28, 1996. The remains were radio-carbon dated to 9,400 years old.
what is genetic drift? important evolutionary process that leads to changes in gene variation over time. (may explain why more recent Native American skeletons don't look like earlier skeletons)
What is morphology? physical characteristics or traits of a human skull such as height, width of the cheek bones, shape of the eye sockets and chin, etc.
What is glacier? an ancient mass of ice that moves over land.
What is radio-carbon dating? is a dating method that uses the naturally occurring radioisotope carbon-14 to determine the age of bones and materials up to about 60,000 years.
What is Clovis? a prehistoric culture that appears around 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last glacial period, known for the sharp, flint spear points adpated to the hunting of large mammals. Named after the site in Clovis, NM.
What is Bering land bridge? was a land bridge roughly 1,000 miles (1,600 km) north to south at its greatest extent, which joined present-day Alaska and eastern Siberia at various times during the Pleistocene ice ages.
What is forensics? scientific tests or techniques used in the investigation of crimes and archaeological finds.
What is anthropology? the study of the origins and social relationships of human beings.
What is Neanderthals? a species of early human that disappeared at the end of the Paleolithic period.
What is Cro-Magnons? was an early group of Homo sapiens (the species to which we belong) that lived about 40,000 years ago in what is now Europe. The earliest known form of modern humans.
what is atlatl? a tool used to throw spears faster and with more accuracy, also known as a spear thrower.
What is hominid? primate human ancestors.
What is Flint? a hard, sedimentary rock shaped into spear points, weapons and tools by early humans during the Stone Age.
What is copper? reddish-brown metal; used by early humans and civilizations, before the Bronze Age, to make tools and weapons.
What is irrigation? supplying land with water through a network of canals.
What is surplus? more of a thing or product than is needed.
what is artisan? a worker who is especially skilled in making something, such as baskets, leather goods, tools, jewelry, pottery, or clothes.
what is civilization? a society with cities, a central government run by official leaders, and workers who specialize in certain jobs, leading to social classes. Writing, art and architecture also characterize a civilization.
What is social class? a group, or class, that is made up of people with similar backgrounds, wealth, and ways of living.
what is century? 100 years
what is millennium? 1000 years
what is decade? 10 years
what is era? 1 year
