Mesopotamia means what? The land between two rivers
What were the names of the "twin rivers"? Tigris and Euphrates
Barley was the chief crop but, what else did they grow? Wheat, sesame, flax, fruit trees, and date plants
Why did city-states have a wall surrounding them? To keep out lions and bandits
What did the middle class do for jobs? They were government officials, shopkeepers, and artisans
Why did Mesopotamian people have disputes? Over boundary lines
What is at the center of all city-states? A ziggurat
What are the two other names for the ziggurat? Mountain of God and Hill of Heaven
Who were the only people who could enter the ziggurat? Priests
Who appeared that male gods made humans to be there servants? Female gods
Why did the rich boys go to school? To become scribes
What did they write in? Cuneiform
Why did writing develop? To keep track of business deals
What did pictures get used for over time? Objects, ideas, and syllables
Who was the most famous priest-king? Gilgamesh
What were the two stories that Gilgamesh talked about? A way to Live Forever, and the Great Flood
