| Osmosis | movement of nutrients throughout the plant which results in higher to lower nutrient solute concentration available to plant |
| Root nodules | swellings on roots containing rhizobium bacteria which take nitrogen from the atmosphere, combine with oxygen, and produce NO3 or NH3, forms or nitrogen which can be used by the plant |
| Semipermeable membrane | tiny pores on the root hairs that allow the passage of water molecules by osmosis |
| Cohesion-tension | vacuum that causes water to move into the vascular cylinder of the root |
| Vascular cylinder | contains the phloem and xylem which transports sugar and dissolved nutrients to the plant |
