Ancient Rome

How did Rome begin to grow? A small settlement.
Who were the First Romans? Latins, Greeks, and Etruscans
What were two things that The First Romans influenced? Civilization and Architecture.
What did Rome fight for? The Italian Peninsula.
What did Rome merchants trade wine and olive oil for? Food, raw materials, and manufactured goods.
Who did Julius Caesar join forces with? He joined forces with Crassus, a wealthy Roman, and Pompey, a popular general.
How did the Republic collapse? They had many problems while their wealth and expanding boundaries was increasing.
What was the name of the period of peace? Pax Romana.
What did the Roman laws specify? What could or could not be done and what the penalties were for breaking the law.
Where did Rome also trade with? China and India.
What was the life of the patricians during the Roman Empire? They lived extravagantly. Wealthy people had two homes (city and country house).
What was the life of the plebeians during the Roman Empire? The poor were not as wealthy. They had bad food and they didn’t get paid as much for the jobs they had. The government supported them with grain, but the quality was bad.
What was the life of a slave like in the Roman Empire? The Romans made a good use of them. Slaves had to do a lot of work and they were not paid.
What were the types of public entertainment that existed in the Roman Empire? Free games, races, mock battles, and gladiator contests.
What measures did the government take to distract and control the masses of ancient Rome? They gave them Public Entertainment, and all games.
How were Jesus’ teachings at odds with Roman values and religious ideas? He taught love and acceptance, and the Romans taught strength and power. Jesus taught that there was one god, while the Romans taught about multiple Gods.
Why might the Romans have felt threatened by Jesus? He was popular and he was talking to the plebeians and slaves.
What did Jesus emphasize in his early teachings? God’s personal relationship to each human being.
Why did the early Christians face persecution from the Romans? They refused to worship Roman gods.
What happened to the Roman Empire as it was getting weaker? Christianity was getting stronger.
How did the eastern half of the Roman empire survive? It held the empire’s centers of trade and wealth and its capital was well protected.
How did Diocletian succeed in preserving the Roman Empire? He doubled the size of the military, checked/controlled inflation, restored the emperor’s prestige, and divided the empire into east and west for more efficient rule.
Why did so many Germanic tribes begin invading the Roman Empire? To get away from the invading Huns who were attacking them.
What is Greco - Roman culture? The mixing of elements of Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman culture.
In what ways did Roman art differ from Greek art? The Greeks were known for beautiful, but idealized sculpture; Roman sculptors created more realistic works.
