TermDefinition
ALPHANUMERIC PAGER displays an entire message, so the physician can return a phone call or act on the information that is relayed to the pager. Some pagers also include e-mail so that a return message can be sent.
ANSWERING SERVICE provides a medical office with coverage outside of normal business hours.
APPOINTMENT MATRIX basic pattern of available appointment times.
CATEGORIZATION scheduling similar types of patients or examinations on the same day or part of the day. Each group is seen on a certain day or within a certain time block during the day.
DOUBLE-BOOKING scheduling two patients for the same appointment time
ESTABLISHED PATIENT a patient who has been seen by one of the physicians in the practice of the same specialty within the past 3 year.
FIXED APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING an appointment scheduling method in which each patient is given a different, specific appointment time.
HOSPICE Palliative service provide for patient whose life expectancy is less than 6 months. Services may be provided in the patient’s home, a nursing home, or a special hospice facility.
MODIFIED WAVE SCHEDULING an appointment system that has some fixed appointments and some appointments times during which patients are seen in order of arrival.
NO-SHOW A patient who does not keep a scheduled appointment
OPEN HOURS Patients may come to the office at any time during the range of hours.
PATIENT SELF –SCHEDULING the practice of allowing patients to have access to the computer scheduling program so that they can schedule their own appointments.
PREAUTHORIZATION Permission from a patient’s insurance company for a test, procedure, or surgery.
SCREENING it is the application of a disease-detection test to people who are healthy
SINGLE BOOKING an appointment scheduling method in which each patient is given a different, specific appointments time.
SMARTPHONE A cellphone with computer capabilities.
STREAM SCHEDULING an appointment scheduling method in which each patient is given a different, specific appointment time.
TIME-SPECIFIED SCHEDULING an appointment scheduling method in which each patient is given a different, specific appointment time.
TRIAGE the process of separating patients by the urgency of their need for care.
