Islam 1 Key Terms

TermDefinition
Muhammad Founderer of Islam. He is prophet of Islam who Muslims believe was the last to receive the word of God.
mosque Islamic house of worship.
Hajj Pilgrimag to Islam's holy city of Mecca made by all Muslims.
Five Pillars The basic practices of Islam that are important to all Muslims.
caliph Successor after Muhammad's death.
Allah Arabic word for God.
Hijra Migration of Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina.
Ramadan Month-long celebration that marks the last month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims fast from sun up to sun down during Ramadan.
Fasting Not eating or drinking anything for an extended period of time.
Imam Leader of services in a mosque.
Arabian Peninsula Location where the 3 Semitic religions began.
nomad People who move from place to place with no permanent home.
oasis A place in the desert that has water and some vegetatioin.
Bedouin Arab nomatic people.
Mecca The Islamic holy city.
Ka'aba Shrine located in the holy city of Mecca.
Muslims Followers of Islam.
Sunnis A branch of Islam that follows the sunnahs. 90% of Muslims are Sunni.
Shi'as A branch of Islam that follows Ali. 10% of Muslims are Shi'as and most live in Iran.
Sharia Islamic law.
Jihad Jihad means "struggle for the faith."
Koran The holy book of Islam.
