Ho Chi Minh Leader of the Vietnamese independence movement.
Viet Minh Communist nationalist group that fought the French and Japanese to gain independence for Vietnam.
Domino Theory The belief that if one country fell to communism, then its neighbors would also.
Containment The US desire to keep communism in the countries that already had it.
Mohandas K. Gandhi Leader of the Indian independence movement. He believed in non-violent resistance.
Great Leap Forward Mao's plan to modernize the economy of China. It focused on industry and agriculture. The plan was a massive failure.
Cultural Revolution Mao's plan to change the cultural of China by eliminating old ideas and enemies of communism. It caused massive social disruption in China and the deaths of over one million people. Many intellectuals fled the country, were imprisoned, or killed.
Mao Zedong Leader of the Communists in the Chinese Civil War and the first leader of communist China. He was the man behind the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.
Chang Kai Shek Leader of the Nationalists in the Chinese Civil War.
Deng Xioping Leader of China after the death of Mao. He introduced more economic freedom to China through his program of the "Four Modernizations". He was also the leader that ordered the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
Tiananmen Square Massacre A government crackdown on Chinese students who were protesting for more democratic and political rights in China.
Commune A group of people living together and sharing possessions and responsibilities.
Collectivism The theory and practice of the ownership of land and the means of production by the people or the government.
Nationalism Pride in your people or culture. It is often the motivation behind independence movements.
