Ancient Greece

| harbor | A sheltered place along the coast |
| Mediterranean Sea | a sea that almost entirely surrounded by land; an important trade route for ancient Greece |
| Crete | biggest Greek island; about one day's sail from mainland Greece |
| Rhodes | a Greek island east of Crete near what today is called Turkey |
| Attica | A wedge shaped peninsula that juts into the Mediterranean; suitable plain for farming |
| Peloponnesus | Large mountainous peninsula shaped like a giant hand reaching toward Crete |
| Phoenicia | A land now called Lebanon |
| polis | Another word for city-state |
| acropolis | A large hill where residents could seek shelter and safety in times of war |
| agora | A place where people gathered to trade; marketplace |
| citizen | A person who has certain rights and responsibilities in country or community |
| oligarchy | government in which rich and powerful men control decision making |
| monarchy | government is ruled by one person |
| democracy | citizens vote to make government decisions |
