Why were Europeans upset with the Congress of Vienna? The new borders reinforced regional division, allowed for foreign rulers and foreign control, and it restored conservative monarchs, destroying the liberal progress of the Enlightenment
What was the purpose of the revolutions of 1848? To restore the liberal ways lost because of the Congress of Vienna's intervention
What country avoided revolution in 1848 and why? Great Britain; It was unaffected by the Congress of Vienna and thus experienced no discontent with their situation
How did Giuseppe Garibaldi help Italian unification? He expelled Spanish Bourbons from Southern Italy through military force
How did Count Camilo de Cavour help Italian unification? He united Northern Italy through political manipulation and alliances of convenience
What war brought the Papal States into "Italy"? The Franco-Prussian War
Why were the Papal States the last to unify with "Italy"? They relied on foreign French forces for protection, which had to be driven out before Italy could attempt unification
What was the "Risorgimento"? Italian Unification/the "resurgence" of the Roman Empire through establishing an Italian nation
Who was Otto von Bismarck? A powerful figure who led the German-speaking people in the final stretch to unification
What is "realpolitik"? A political practice based on practicality and efficiency as opposed to morality or idealism
What was the nickname of Simon Bolivar? "The Liberator"
What countries did Simon Bolivar liberate? Numerous countries in Northern South America: Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, etc.
Who is the father of Mexican independence? Father Miguel Hidalgo
Who were the peninsulares? People who came from Spain to Latin America and served the Spanish crown in government positions
Who were the creoles and why did they rebel? The children of peninsulares born in Latin America who felt they were being treated unfairly and desired equality with peninsulares
Who is the father of Haitian Independence? Toussaint L'Ouverture
What was unique about the Haitian Revolution? It's main revolters were slaves
What was the purpose of the Monroe Doctrine? To keep European empires/colonies, trade, and conflicts out of the Americas
