Sin and Forgiveness

TermDefinition
capital sins Moral vices that give rise to many other failures to love (i.e. pride, avarice, lust, wrath, gluttony, envy, and sloth)
concupiscence An inclination toward evil caused by Original Sin; the rebellion of the flesh against the spirit
personal sin A failure to love God above everything and our neighbor as ourselves
venial sin Personal sin that weakens but does not kill our relationship with God
mortal sin Personal sin that involves a serious matter, sufficient reflection, and full consent of the will and results in total rejection of God and alienation from him
Reconciliation A sacrament of healing through which Christ extends his forgiveness to sinners
social sin A cycle of sin, violence, and injustice caused by individual sins
repentance Turning away from our sins and embracing the way of the cross; a key aspect of following Jesus
contrition Heartfelt sorrow and aversion for sins committed along with the intention to sin no more
absolution The statement by which a priest, speaking as the official minister of Christ's Church, declares forgiveness of sins to a repentant sinner in the Sacrament of Reconciliation
