| subcontinent | a large landmass that is smaller than a continent. Example: India |
| monsoons | seasonal wind patterns that cause wet and dry seasons |
| sanskrit | the most important language of ancient India |
| caste system | social class system that divides Indian society based on a person's birth. Is a rigid class system |
| Hinduism | the largest religion in India |
| reincarnation | the rebirth of the soul. A belief in Hinduism and Buddhism |
| karma | the effects that good bad actions have on a person's soul |
| fasting | going without food. |
| meditation | the focusing of the mind on spiritual ideas |
| Buddhism | A religion based on the teachings of Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama). Began in India. |
| nirvana | A state of perfect peace. A "oneness" with the universe. A belief in Buddhism where the cycle of reincarnation ends. |
| missionaries | people who work to spread their religious beliefs |
| metallurgy | The science of working with metals |
| alloys | Mixture of two or more metals |
| Hindu-Arabic numerals | The numbers we use today |
| inoculation | injecting a person with a small dose of a virus to the them build up immunity (defenses) against the disease |
| Astronomy | The study of stars and planets |
| Dharma | Duties or responsibilities that a Hindu has based upon where they are in the caste system |
| untouchables | Outcastes of Hindu India. Are supposed to alert people to their presence. Other people are supposed to avoid contact with them. Live on the outskirts of the city. |
| Indus | River around which the earliest civilization on the Indian subcontinent was located |
