Common Serology/Immunology Tests

COMMON SEOLOGY/IMMUNOLOGY TESTS - BACTERIAL STUDIES ANA, FTA-ABS, RPR
(ANA) Antinuclear Antibody Positive results indicate autoimmune disorders. Specifically Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
(FTA-ABS) Fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test: confirmatory test for syphilis.
(RPR) Rapid Plasma Reagin
VIRAL STUDIES Anti-HIV, CMV, EBV, HBsAg, HCV
Anti-HIV Screening for Human immunodeficiency virus
(CMV) Cytomegalovirus Antibody Screening for evidence of current or past infection.
(EBV) Epstein-Barr Virus Presence of heterophil antibody indicates infectious mononucleosis.
(HBsAg) Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Demonstrates presence of Hepatitis antigen on surface of red cells.
HCV Demonstrates presence of hepatitis antibodies on surface of red cells.
GENERAL STUDIES Cold agglutinins, hs-CRP, HCG, Immunoglobulins, RF
Cold Agglutinins Present in cases of atypical pneumonia.
(hs-CRP) High-Sensitivity C-reactive protein Increased levels of protein are present in inflammatory conditions.
(HCG) Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Present in pregnancy (serum & urine).
Immunoglobulins Can show presence of 5 subclasses of antibodies made by immune system to neutralize foreign antigens, such as bacteria or toxins.
(RF) Rheumatoid Factor Presence of antibody indicates rheumatoid arthritis.
