| double cropping | The raising of two or more crops on the same land in one season, either at the same time or back to back. |
| province | a large section of a country which has its own administration |
| middle man | a person who buys goods from producers and sells them to retailers or consumers |
| nobility | the group of people belonging to the noble class in a country, especially those with a hereditary or honorary title |
| terrace | a narrow, flat strip of land on the slope of a hill that is used for growing crops |
| pictograph | picture symbols used in writing |
| caravan | a group of traders that travel together |
| mandate of heaven | The Chinese philosophical concept of the circumstances under which a ruler is allowed to rule |
| analects | a collection of short literary or philosophical extracts |
| levee | an embankment built to prevent the overflow of a river |
| oracle bones | ancient pieces of shell or bone which were used for divination in ancient China |
| civil service | service as a government official |
| seismograph | a device that measures the strength of an earthquake |
