From Human Prehistory to the Early Civilizations

| Homo Sapiens Sapiens | The newest human breed of which all humans in the world today are decendents. Originated about 240,000 years ago in Africa. |
| Neolithic (New Stone) Age | (10,000 BCE - 5000 BCE). A period of time in human history characterized by the development of agriculture and permanent settlements. |
| Bronze Age | Period that began around 3000 B.C.E. when metalworking had become so commonplace in the Middle East that the use of stone tools dissipated. Marked the end of the stone ages. |
| Neolithic Revolution | 10,000 - 8,000 BCE) The development of agriculture and the domestication of animals as a food source. This led to the development of permanent settlements and the start of civilization. |
| Slash and Burn Agriculture | A system that existed in many parts of the world, including protions of the American South, until about 150 years ago. Here, people would burn off trees in an area, farm intensively for a few years until the soil was depleted, and then move on. |

| pyramid | A triangular shaped building used as tombs for the pharaohs. |
| ideogrpahs | Writing system that uses pictures of ideas. |
| Phoenicians | Early trading civilization located in present day Lebanon & Syria along Mediterranean; produced glass, papyrus scrolls, & dyes; developed alphabet to keep track of business dealings which is the basis for the western alphabets of today. |
| monotheism | The belief in one god or goddess. |
