| triumverate | 3 headed rule of government in Rome where power was shared |
| aqueduct | water intake and sewage system built in Rome. |
| messiah | the chosen prophet that was predicted in the Bible that would be the son of God that came to save man. |
| martyr | a person that dies for a cause |
| inflation | the increase in prices of any good usually determined by the laws of supply and demand |
| bishop | part of the leadership heirarchy in the Catholic church. |
| cavalry | army that fights on horseback. |
| civil service | system set up to have only the most educated and competent people work in the government. |
| mandarin | ethnic Chinese people |
| ethics | values of a culure that dictate behavior. |
| filial piety | respect and duty to one's ancestor's or elders in China. |
| yin and yang | part of the Taoism/Daosim philosophy symbolizing balance (light in dark, good in bad and vice versa) |
