aristocrat landholding nobles, who as members of the upper class provided cavalry for the King's military ventures
phalanx military formation used by the Greeks to fight as a single unit.
tyrant When one man seized power and ruled the polis single-handedly. Can also refer to a King that rules with a heavy hand or cruel and unjustly.
constitution written document that details the formation of the government.
mercenary soldier that fights for money or reward
oligarchy rule by a minority of elite
classical an artistic style that includes works characterized by beautiful simplicity and graceful balance
tragedy genre of plays developed by the Greeks focusing on tragic events of real life.

comedy genre of plays developed by the Greeks which focus on humorous events in life.
philosopher Lover of wisdom, developed reason and logic.

triumverate 3 headed rule of government in Rome where power was shared
aqueduct water intake and sewage system built in Rome.
messiah the chosen prophet that was predicted in the Bible that would be the son of God that came to save man.
martyr a person that dies for a cause
inflation the increase in prices of any good usually determined by the laws of supply and demand
bishop part of the leadership heirarchy in the Catholic church.
cavalry army that fights on horseback.
civil service system set up to have only the most educated and competent people work in the government.
mandarin ethnic Chinese people
ethics values of a culure that dictate behavior.
filial piety respect and duty to one's ancestor's or elders in China.
yin and yang part of the Taoism/Daosim philosophy symbolizing balance (light in dark, good in bad and vice versa)
heirarchy demonstration of a power structure
extended family Aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents
nuclear family parent(s), children
acupuncture ancient chinese from of medecine using needles in various pressure points to relieve pain or cure disease.
