anthropologist A person that studies ancient artifacts to determine how the people of a culture interacted.
paleontologist A person that studies fossil remains to learn about prehistoric periods
archaeologist A person that studies prehistoric life by unearthing and interpreting ancient artifacts.
artifact evidence of culture in the form of fossils, bones, clothing, tools, etc..
nomad a person that moves around from place to place in search of food.
economy the ways in which people use their environment(resources)to meet their material needs.
cultural diffusion the blending or mixing of different values, beliefs or practices.
prehistory Era prior to written records.
Culture all the things that make up a person's every day life.
monarchy Form of government ruled by Kings and Queens.
Theocracy Form of government where religious values and leaders are used to run day to day government.
regionalism The belief that various geographic barriers can cause diversity by cultures adapting to their surroundings.
pharoah Egyptian King
bureaucracy Levels of government between leader(s) and the people.
polytheism the belief in more than one or many gods.
cuneiform Ancient Sumerian from of writing on clay tablets with a wedge shaped stylus.
mandate a sign of support from the gods or the people.
empire the conquering of neighboring city-states into a larger body controlled by one leader or group of people.
city-state earliest form of government that defined a group of people.
monsoon wind patterns in South Asia that bring extreme climate changes (Wet season and Dry Season)
sub-contintent portion of a continent separated by a significant land mass (like a mountain range or desert).
confederation loose alliance of city-states with a common interest like trade.
alphabet made up of letters or symbols. The basis of written language and words.
colony a remote area claimed by a group of people from another civilization/country etc.
barter trade goods/services for other goods/services. The basis of a traditional economy.
monotheism the belief in one god.
prophet a person that has been chosen to deliver a message from god(s).
covenant a sacred agreement btween God and Abraham which became the foundation of Judaism.
exodus generally refers to a group of people being scattered or escaping by circumstance (like war or slavery).
diaspora the scattering of the Jews.
Neolithic Revolution The change from hunting and gathering to settled farming civilizations with domesticated animals.
