intermediate directions northeast, southeast, northwest, and southwest
key or legend a box that explains the map's symbols
latitude imaginary lines that run east and west around the earth
longitude imaginary lines that run north and south around the earth
meridian another name for the line of longitude
parallel another name for the line of latitude
physical map shows landforms and bodies of water
political map shows cities, states, and countries
scale marks of small distances that stand for miles and kilometers
temperate zone parts of the earth between the Arctic Circle and the Tropic of Cancer, and between the Antarctic Circle and the Tropic of Capricorn
Tropic of Cancer a location at 23 degrees North latitude
Tropic of Capricorn a location at 23 degrees South latitude
tropical zone section between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn
