North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO - Military Treaty signed in 1949 between US and Western European countries promising defense in case of Soviet aggression.
Berlin Wall Barrier Separating Westand East Berlin built in 1961 by East Germans to prevent people living in communist East Berlin from escaping to democratic West Berlin; became a Symbol of the Cold War
Cuban Missile Crisis Conflict between US and Soviet Union after Soviets installed nuclear missiles in Cuba
Warsaw Pact 1955 - military treaty between Soviet Union and its European Satellite countries to defend against invasion by an outside force
Containment Foreign policy of the United States during the Cold War to defend against communist expansion
Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars) started 1983 by President Reagan, anti-ballistic missile system to prevent missile attacks by the Soviet Union
