Ancient India
Term | Definition |

Subcontinent | A large landmass that is attached to an even larger continent, yet is geographically and politically a separate region. |
Vedas | A collection of sacred knowledge and are the foundations of Hinduism. |
Raja | A Hindu small village leader who protected the land in exchange for food and money. |
Brahmins | Hindu priests that are on the top of the Vedic Social Pyramid (cast system) |
Kshatiyas | Hindu warriors that are on the 2nd tier of the Vedic Social Pyramid (cast system) |
Vaisyas | Hindu landowners/merchants that are on the 3rd tier of the Vedic Social Pyramid (cast system) |
Sudras | Hindu peasant/laborers that are on the 4th tier of the Vedic Social Pyramid (cast system) |
Untouchables | Outcast in Hindu society that are on the bottom of the Vedic Social Pyramid (cast system) and are not protected by Hindu laws. |
Brahman | Hindu term: Belief in an eternal spirit that created and maintains the world. The Hindu god is manifested and worshiped through numerous deities. |
Moksha | Hindu term: Release from the cycle of rebirth. |
Dharma | Hindu term: Fulfillment of ritual and spiritual obligations. |
Karma | Hindu term: The result of one’s actions which impacts their destiny. |
Sanskrit | the Indian style of ancient writing |
Indian Civilization | River Valley Civilization in South Asia on the Indus River |
Classical Indian Civilizations | Civilizations that began in the Indus and Ganges River Valleys and spread throughout the Indian Subcontinent. |
Harrappa & Mohenjo-Daro | Early river civilizations in the Indian River Valley Civilization |
Caste System | Social structure that is rigid and people are born into and define all interactions and choices of occupations. |
Indigenous | people groups living where they were born |
Hindu Kush | Mountain pass between Indian subcontinent and Middle East that fostered trade |
Hinduism | Religion developed in classical India that believes in many forms of one God. A person is judged by Karma for reincarnation for future life. |
Vedas & Upanishads | Name of Hindu sacred religious writtings |
Buddhism | Religion developed in India by Siddhartha Gautama based on the Four Noble Truths and Eight-fold Path to Enlightenment. |
Ashoka | Mauryan Empire leader who sent Buddhist missionaries throughout Asia (China). |
Siddhartha Guatama | Founder of Buddhism that originated in India and then spread to China. |
