Rubenstein Chapter 6


What is agnosticism? It is the belief that the existence of God cannot be proven empirically.
What is animism? It is the belief that objects (such as stones) or natural events (such as earthquakes) have a discrete spirit and conscious life.
What is atheism? It is the belief that God does not Exist.
What is an autonomous religion? It is a religion that does not have a central authority but shares ideas and cooperates informally.
What is a branch? It is a large and fundamental division within a religion.
What is a caste? It is the class or distinct hereditary order into which a Hindu is assigned, according to religious law.
What is a congregation? It is a local assembly of persons brought together for common religious worship.
What is cosmogony? It is a set of religious beliefs concerning the origin of the universe.
What is a denomination? A denomination is a division of a branch that unites a number of local congregations into a single legal and administrative body.
What is an ethnic religion? It is a religion with a relatively concentrated spatial distribution.
What is fundamentalism?
What is a ghetto? It is a section of a city where minority members live due to social, legal, or economic pressure.
What is a hierarchical religion? It is a religion in which a central authority exercises a high degree of control.
What is a missionary? It is an individual who helps to diffuse a universalizing religion.
What is monotheism? It is the doctrine of or belief in the existence of only one God.
What is a pilgrimage? It is a journey to a place considered sacred for religious purposes.
What is polytheism? It is belief in or worship of more than one god.
What is a universalizing religion? It is a religion that attempts to appeal to all people.
