Anatomical Direction

CBCS Anatomical Directional Terms

TermDefinition
Transverse Plane Horizontal plane that divides the body into upper and lower halves
Midsagittal (Median) Plane Vertical plane that divides the body into left and right halves
Coronal (Frontal) Plane Vertical plane that divides the body into front and rear halves
Anterior The front of the body
Posterior The back of the body
Superior Body parts above other body parts
Inferior Body parts below other body parts
Medial Close to the midline (middle)
Lateral Far from the midline (middle)
Distal Far from a specified point of reference
Proximal Close to a specified point of reference
