World War Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Imperialism A policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically,economically, and/or socially.
Militarism A policy of glorifying military power and keeping a standing army always prepared for war.
Nationalism The belief that people should be loyal mainly to their nation rather to a king or an empire.
Alliance Systems Created due to growing national rivalries starting in the 1870s. Designed to keep peace in Europe.nBut pushed Europe to war instead.
Total War A conflict in which the participating countries devote all their resources to the war effort.
Trench Warfare A form of warfare in which opposing armies fight each other from trenches dug at the battlefield.
Techonological Innovations World War I proved to be the first modern war fought with new weapons that would change the ways wars are fought forever.

14 points A series of proposals in which U.S. Presidents Wilson outlined a plan for achieving a lasting peace after World War I
Treaty of Versailles A peace treaty signed by Germany and the Allied powers after World War I
League of Nations International association formed after World War I with the goal of keeping peace among nations
Armenian Genocide Christians here demanded their freedom from the Ottomans. When World War I broke out, nearly 600,000 died of starvation by solders
Russian Revolution The Bolshevik. Led by Lenin. Promised the people "peace, bread, and land." Nicholas II abdicated and the Bolsheviks seized power in November of 1917.
Bolsheviks A group of Revolutionary Russian Marxist who took control of Russia's govt. in Nov. 1917 and changed their name to Communist.
Triple Alliance Military alliance between Germany, Italy, & Austria-Hungary in the years Receding World War I
Triple Entente Military alliance between France, Russia, & Great Britain in the years preceding World War I
