What is frozen shoulder? | A painful significant restriction of active and passive range of motion at the shoulder. Most frequently in abduction and external rotation. |
What happens with frozen shoulder? | The joint capsule becomes tightened and inflexible. |
Which age groups are rarely affected by frozen shoulder? | - Under 40- Over 70 |
What are the causes of frozen shoulder? | - idiopathich factors- intrinsic musculoskeletal trauma or disorder- TP's - Postural dysfunction- Ceasing usage- Extrinsic disorders (myocardial etc) |
What is the difference between Primary frozen shoulder and Secondary? | - Primary: Idiopathic- Secondary: Results after injury |
Describe the acute stage of frozen shoulder. | Pain is severe at night "pain phase" and inflammation is present. |
Describe the subacute phase of frozen shoulder. | "stiffening phase"; severe pain tends to diminish. |
Descibe the chronic stage of frozen shoulder | Pain is localized in the lateral arm. |
What are some relavant health history qu's? | - Previous injury/sugery?- Underlying conditions?- Location of pain?- Disruption of sleep?- What actions are limited?- Medically diagnosed? |

What are the palpation findings? | -Dysuse atrophy and fibrosis, TP and hypertonic muscles of the shoulder girdle. |
What are the acute ROM findings? | - Decreased AF rom due to pain (watch for compensation).- Decreased PR rom due to pain - AR is full strength due to it being a joint issue. |
What are the chronic ROM findings? | AF/PR return to normal, AR decreased possible to reduced stregth for compensating structures. |
What are the short term goals of massage and frozen shoulder? | - Decrease pain, SNS firing and treat compensating structures.- Decrease adhesions- Decrease trigger points.- Mobilize HYPOmobile joints with joint play. |
What hydro do we use for frozen shoulder? | Heat to compensating strucutres to maintain ROM and ice to inflammed structures. |
What is a good Remex for frozen shoulder? | The pendyallum action in a pain free range. |
What is a good way to bolster for frozen shoulder when the client is supine? | A towel rolled down the spine to open up the pecs. |
What special tests can be used for this condition? | Apley's scratch test and passive relaxed abduction to confirm. |
What tests can be used to differenciate? | Any tendinitis test or bursitis test. |
What is a treatment plan for Frozen Shoulder? | treat adhesions and Tps in joint capsule, include joint play to increase successive action at the joint. Use heat on shoulder girdle. Treat shoulder girdle, upper back, neck and pecs. |
