Primary function Produces millions of sperm; delivers them to female body where one can unite With an egg to create life
Perineum External; region between scrotum and anus 'taint'
Scrotum External; sac like structure that encloses and supports testicles
Testicles External; two small egg shaped glands that produce the sperm and male hormone testosterone
Penis External; used for sexual intercourse and urination
Glans penis Head of penis
Prepuce Aka foreskin; retractable double layered fold of skin and mucous membrane that covers and protects the glans penis
Epididymis Coiled tube at the upper part of each testicle
Semen Whitish fluid containing sperm that's ejaculated through the urethra at the peak of male sexual excitement
Vas deferens Internal; Long narrow continuation of each epididymis
Seminal vesicles Internal; glands located at base of bladder that secretes thick yellow substance that nourishes sperm cells and form 60% of the volume of semen
Prostate gland Internal; lies under bladder and surrounds upper end of urethra. Secretes thick alkaline fluid into the semen that aid in motility
Cowper's gland Aka bulbourethral glands Internal; secretes a pre-ejaculate during sexual arousal
Urethra Internal; passes through penis to outside the body
Sperm Aka spermatozoa; Male gametes
Impotence ED-inability of the male to achieve or maintain a penile erection
Testitis (Orchitis) Inflammation of one or both testicles
Azoospermia Absence of sperm in semen
Oliospermia Sperm count below 20 million; common cause of male infertility
Priapism Painful erection lasting 4 or more hrs
Torsion of the testes Sharp pain in scrotum caused by twisting of the Vas deferens and blood vessels leading into the testicle
Cryptorchidism Undescended testicle
Prostate-specific antigen Protein products by the cells of the prostate gland to help liquify semen
Circumcision Surgical removal of the foreskin
Transurethtal resection of the prostate (TURP) Removal of all or party of the prostate gland
Male sterilization Any procedure rendering an individual incapable of reproduction
Vasectomy Male sterilization procedure; small portion of Vas deferens is surgically removed
Vasovasectomy Vasectomy reversal
Castration Aka bilateral orchidectomy; surgical removal or destruction of both testicles
Chlamydia Highly contagious caused by bacterium chlamydia trachomatis
Genital herpes Caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 ; highly contagious
Syphillis Caused by bacterium treponema pallidum; highly contagious
Gonorrhea Affects the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes; highly contagious
Urologist Physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the genitourinary system
