| city-states | an independent city--and sometimes its surrounding land--which has its own government, completely separate from other countries |
| civilizations | an advanced state of human society in which a high level of culture, technology, and government have been reached. Settlements that meet the seven criteria. |
| empires | a group of territories or peoples under one ruler |
| geography | The study of the physical features of the earth and it's atmosphere, and impact on humans |
| resources | a source of supply, support, or aid especially one that can be readily drawn upon when needed |
| trade | exchange something for something else |
| silk road | an ancient network of trade routes that for centuries were central to cultural interaction through regions of the Asian continent. |
| cultural diffusion | the spread of culture, including aspects such as clothing and food, from one group to another, typically as a result of making contact. |
| economic | pertaining to the production, distribution, and use of income, weath and commodities. |
| supply | economic concept that describes the total amount of specific good or service that is available to consumers |
| demand | an economic principle that describes a consumer's desire and willingness to pay a price for a specific good or service. |
| trade routes | any route usually taken by merchant ships, caravans, etc. in order to trade one good for another. |
| globalization | a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology |
| water trade routes | routes that use ships for trade |
| 7 characteristics of civilizations | criteria used to determine if a society is a civilization. The criteria include the development of cities, government and law, system of writing, specialization, social system, complex technology, organized religion |
| Government systems | the group of people who control and make decisions for a country, state, empire, city-state, etc |
| Monarchy | a form of government with a single person at its head known as a monarch which reign for life and pass on their power through a bloodline (hereditary to children) |
| Oligarchy | A country that is controlled by a small group of people |
| Emperor | A dictatorship with one-man rule that evolved from the Roman Republic |
| Oligarchs | Ruler in an oligarchy |
| Kings | the male ruler of an independent state, especially one who inherits the position by right of birth. |
| Absolute Power | complete authority to act in an area |
| Legal Codes | set of rules |
| Communication | the exchange of thoughts, information, or messages |
| Monarch | ruler of a monarchy |
| Social Hierarchies | division of society according to caste, rank or class |
| autocracy | government in which one person possesses unlimited power |
| dynasty | a family of rulers who rule over a country for a long period of time |
| military | relating to or characteristic of soldiers or armed forces |
| conquest | the act of taking control of a country, city, etc through the use of force |
| taxes | a sum of money demanded by a government for its support |
| merchants | a person who buys and sells commodities for profit; dealer/trader |
