What did castles look like? They were stone houses that had thick stone walls, lookout towers, and a moat.
What did nobles live in prior to (before) they lived in castles? wooden houses
When did nobles live in wooden houses? 800-1000 A.D.
What were palisades? high wooden fences built for protection
What is a portcullis? the drawbridge that led to an iron gate and was the entrance of the castle
What was a keep? a tower with thick walls
Who lived in a keep? the household
Who were ladies? noblewomen that were usally married by the age of 12, ran the household, and looked after the poor
