What was the effect of the nationalism that developed in the 19th century, on events of the early 20th century? rivalries over colonies & trade grew during age of frenzied nationalism & imperialist expansion, increase in competition, & ethnic groups without their own nations dreamed of creating their own nation states (Slavics-Balkans,Irish-Britain; Poles-Russia)
What events led to the start of World War I? nationalism and the system of alliances led to competition, the desire by some leaders to suppress internal disorder from the socialist labor movements, and the growth of mass armies increased tensions in Europe
Conscription (p.718) military draft
Mobilization (p.720) the process of assembling troops and spplies and making them ready for war
Triple Alliance (p.718) Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy created an alliance in 1882
Triple Entente (p.718) France, Great Britain, and Russia created an alliance in 1907
Archduke Ferdinand (p.719) the heir of Austria-hungary and his wife Sophia were assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia by conspirators who wanted Bosnia to be free of Austria-Hungary
Schlieffen Plan (p.720) General Alfred von Schlieffen made a plan for two-front war w/ France & Russia. Germany would conduct a small holding action against Russia while most of the army would carry out rapid invasion of France. After France they would move east against Russia.
