| consul | 2 commanded the army and government |
| senate | the upper house of the United States Congress |
| dictator | A ruler who has complete power over a country |
| legion | all citizen land owners |
| punic wars | Rome vs. Carthage |
| hannibal | the great Carthaginian leader |
| civil war | a war between people in the same country |
| julius caesar | conqueror of Gaul and master of Italy (100-44 BC) |
| triumvirate | In ancient Rome, a group of three leaders sharing control of the government. |
| augustus | First emperor of the Roman Empire. Julius Caesar's grand-nephew. |
| paxRomana | long era of peace and saftey in roman empire |
| jesus | Religious leader and founder of Christianity |
| apostle | any important early teacher of Christianity or a Christian missionary to a people |
| paul | Follower of Jesus who helped spread Christianity throughout the Roman world |
| diaspora | scattering of the Jews |
| constantine | first Christian emperor |
| bishop | high-ranking church official with authority over a local area, or diocese |
| peter | disciple of Jesus and leader of the apostles |
| pope | the head of the Roman Catholic Church |
| inflation | Increased prices for goods and services combined with the reduced value of money |
| mercenary | a person hired to fight for another country than their own |
| diocletian | Roman emperor who divided the empire in two and oversaw the eastern part |
| conatantinople | capital of eastern roman empire- named after constantine |
| attila | Leader of the Huns who put pressure on the Roman Empire's borders during the 5th century. |
| greco-roman culture | an ancient culture that developed from a blending of Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman cultures. |
| pompeii | Roman town covered by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius |
| virgil | a Roman poet |
| tacitus | roman historian |
| aqueduct | a structure that carries water over long distances |
