Naming Catholic terms and concepts

Cathedra The Bishop's chair
Ambo Another word for 'lectern' - where the readings are proclaimed
Sanctuary The area from which the priest celebrates Mass
Sacristy Where the priest prepares for Mass
Altar The large table on the altar, where the priest prepares for the Eucharist
Tabernacle Where the blessed bread is kept
Daily Mass Chapel The area at the back of the Cathedral where Thursday Masses are celebrated
Font Where baptisms are held; holds the water
Choir Where the musicians and sings sit
Nave The small area between the portico and the main body of the Cathedral
Portico The foyer of the Cathedral
Confessional Where the Sacrament of Reconciliation takes place
Credence table Where the bread, wine, glassware and plates are placed until the Liturgy of the Eucharist
Chalice Holds the wine consumed at Communion time
Ciborium Holds the bread consumed at Communion time
Stole The coloured piece of material worn around the priest's shoulders
Alb The white gown worn by the priest
