What caused people to migrate to Africa? Changes in climate - long ago Sahara desert had rivers, grassy plains and forests. Then climate began to change- rain stopped, land dried up. People moved eaat and south.
Migration can be traced through language.How did the Bantu languages help trace African migration Many words in these languages are similiar. As Bantu moved south, their languages spread with them.
What effect did gold have on West Africa? It made them wealthy and brought in trade goods from other lands.
How did the location of Ghana help make it a wealthy empire? Its location between salt mines in the Sahara and the gold fields in Wangara made the middlemen wealthy and turned Ghana into an empire.
Who is the Mansa Musa? The greatest king of Mali. Stong Muslim ruler. Made pilgrimage to Mecca and brought back architect and Arab scholars to to build mosques and teach Muslims beliefs and scholarship.
Why did Mali get included by the mapmakers? Mansa Musa's pilgrimage to Mecca caught the attention of the European mapmakers. Europeans began to take an interest in the gold and other resources Mali had to offer.
What effects did Mansa Musa have on African history? Europeans began to take an interest in gold and other resources of Mali.
What was a common feature of West African kingdoms? They were crossroads for trade.
What goods were exported by Kingdom of Axum? These goods, ivory, frankincense and myrrh were wanted by Greece and Rome. Luxury craftworks from copper, brass and crystal were in demand.
What country replaced the Axum civilization? Ethiopia
What were the major dynasties of Ethiopia? Zagwe dynasty & Solomonid dynasty
Why did the Portuguese attack cities of East Africa in 1500's? They wanted control of the trade in the Indian Ocean.
What was the purpose of the enclosures of Great Zimbabwe and the walls of Benin? Built to show the power and importance of the king.
What effect did International trade have on Benin? Grew to become a powerful empire.
Where is the best climate for agriculture located in Africa? North African coast and Southern tip of Africa.
What is the best climate in Africa for agriculture? Hot summers and mild rainy winters.
What clues help lead to the knowledge of an areas past? Similiarities in languages can be traced to their origin. Historians can understand how people moved around by tracing language origins. Linguists communicate with older members of a group to learn of experiences.
