Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (DMS7SS)

| Mesopotamia | A region in extending from Iraq and Syria which included the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Greek for "between the rivers". |
| Civilization | Way of life for a large group of people, such as a cities or a nation, which includes: government, religion, art & architecture, technology, system of writing, social structure, and stable food supply. |
| Government | The system in which a culture is organized, controlled, and regulated. |
| Irrigagtion | A man-made system to supply water to crops and farm fields. |
| Cuneiform | System of writing used by the Mesopotamians. |
| Hammurabi's Code | One of the first organized system of laws created in Mesopotamia by a Babylonian king. |
| Sumerians | The people of Sumer, in Mesopotamia. |
| Technology | One of the characteristics of a highly civilized society this is the use of tools and other inventions for practical purposes. The Sumerian's most important invention was the wheel. |
| Art | Human creations intended to express beauty and convey messages. It is one of the characteristics of a highly civilized society. |
| Stable Food Supply | Farming resulting in surplus production. |
| Social Structure | People organizing into different groups, such as a families or clans, or ranks, such as classes. Typically based on wealth, ancestry, or job. |
| Nile River Valley | A river valley in ancient Egypt. |
| Tigris-Euphrates River Valley | River Valley in Mesopotamia |
| Theocracy | A government that is lead by a religious leader. |
| Pharaoh | The leader of ancient Egypt that was viewed as both a king and a god. |
| Hieroglyphics | System of pictographs in ancient Egypt. |
| System of Writing | A means of keeping records or communicating. |
| Religion | A belief system, often including the worship of a god or gods. |
| Pictographs | A writing system involving the use of pictures. |
| Agriculture | The business of farming. |
| Canals | Artificial waterway to allow the passage of boats or irrigation. |
| Rosetta Stone | An artifact that was key to translating hieroglyphics. |
| Polytheism | Religion that teaches the belief in more than one god. |
