SFDS Chapter 9 Byzantine Empire

Justinian The ruler of the Byzantine Empire. Looked to Rome as an example. Made the Justinian Code, created a good economy because of silk, created a strong army, made Byzantium grand by building massive buildings.
Theodora Wife of Justinian. Helped create more rights for women like women can own property. Helped institute government jobs based on merit and not birth. Protected people who worshipped differently.
Justinian Code A set of laws, written by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, that served the Byzantine Empire for hundreds of years.
Monopoly Complete control or ownership.
Mosaics A picture made from bits of colored stone or glass.
Orthodox In religion, supported and accepted by tradition.
Icons A holy picture of Jesus Christ or the saints.
Patriachs A church leader.
Catholic All embracing.
