acropolis A fort built on a hilltop and means "high city in Greek".

barbarian The name given to outsiders by ancient Greeks; also used by the ancient Romans.
oligarchy A system in which a small group controls the government.
agora An open-air market & gathering place in many Greek city-state.
democracy a governing system in which a country's people elect their leaders & rule by majority.
league A group of allies.
patron A wealthy person who pays artists and writers to produce their works.
tragedy A serious play with an unhappy ending.
comedy A play designed to make an audience laugh.
plague A deadly sickness or disease.
demagogue A bad leader.
academy A school offering instruction or training in a special field.
diffuse spread

legacy a persons lasting influence after their death
