Iron Curtain | Europe's division between a mostly democratic Western Europe and a communist Eastern Europe. |
Containment | a policy directed at blocking soviet influence and preventing the expansion of communism. |
Truman Doctrine | an American foreign policy created to counter Soviet geopolitical spread during the Cold War |
Marshall Plan | A program by which the United States gave large amounts of economic aid to European countries to help them rebuild after the devastation of World War II. It was proposed by the United States secretary of state, General George C. Marshall. |
NATO | a military alliance of Western European and North American democracies founded after World War II to strengthen international ties between member states—especially the United States and Europe |
Warsaw Pact | A military alliance of communist nations in eastern Europe. Organized in 1955 in answer to NATO |
Brinkmanship | the art or practice of pursuing a dangerous policy to the limits of safety before stopping, typically in politics. |
U-2 Incident | The 1960 U-2 incident occurred during the Cold War on 1 May 1960, during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower and the premiership of Nikita Khrushchev, when a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down while in Soviet airspace. |
