Abstinence To refrain (not use) from something – alcohol, Drugs
Analgesics Painkillers e.g. Paracetamol, heroin
Dependency To rely on drugs or alcohol
Depressants Anything that decreases brain activity e.g. Alcohol, solvents
Hallucinogens These distort people’s perceptions of the world around them e.g. magic mushrooms, LSD
Illegal drugs These are banned substances and people can be charged for possession or use of these drugs
Medically prescribed drugs Drugs prescribed by a doctor as part of a medical treatment
Moderation To use a small amount of something
Rehabilitate To help someone to get back to their normal self
Socially acceptable drugs Legal drugs that are permitted in society- alcohol or caffeine. These can still be addictive. NOT CANNABIS!
Stimulants Anything that increases brain activity e.g. Ecstasy, Speed, Tobacco, Caffeine
Vulnerable Someone at risk
Hard Drugs Drugs which lead to dependency and cause severe harm to the body
Drug Abuse Using drugs in a way which harms the user
Non-medical use of drugs Taking drugs for reasons other than medical need
Soft drugs Illegal drugs that are not believed by the users to lead to dependency or serious side effects
Recreational drugs Drugs taken by people for fun
