| Term | Definition |

| Abstinence | To refrain (not use) from something – alcohol, Drugs |
| Analgesics | Painkillers e.g. Paracetamol, heroin |
| Dependency | To rely on drugs or alcohol |
| Depressants | Anything that decreases brain activity e.g. Alcohol, solvents |
| Hallucinogens | These distort people’s perceptions of the world around them e.g. magic mushrooms, LSD |
| Illegal drugs | These are banned substances and people can be charged for possession or use of these drugs |
| Medically prescribed drugs | Drugs prescribed by a doctor as part of a medical treatment |
| Moderation | To use a small amount of something |
| Rehabilitate | To help someone to get back to their normal self |
| Socially acceptable drugs | Legal drugs that are permitted in society- alcohol or caffeine. These can still be addictive. NOT CANNABIS! |
| Stimulants | Anything that increases brain activity e.g. Ecstasy, Speed, Tobacco, Caffeine |
| Vulnerable | Someone at risk |
| Hard Drugs | Drugs which lead to dependency and cause severe harm to the body |
| Drug Abuse | Using drugs in a way which harms the user |
| Non-medical use of drugs | Taking drugs for reasons other than medical need |
| Soft drugs | Illegal drugs that are not believed by the users to lead to dependency or serious side effects |
| Recreational drugs | Drugs taken by people for fun |
