Medical Terminology and Abbreviations

QuestionAnswer
Hematoma A semisolid mass of blood in the tissues, caused by injury, disease, or a clotting disorder
Hemangioma a raised and colored bump, known as a birthmark
contusion a bruise
concussion an injury to the brain, often resulting from a blow to the head, that can cause temporary disorientation, memory loss, or unconsciousness
Priapism an erection that is the direct cause of a brain injury or severe concussion
COPD Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
O.D. right eye
O.S. left eye
O.U. both eyes
AKA above the knee amputation
DVT Deep venous thrombosis (blood clot in large vein)
gtt drops
URI Upper respiratory infection, suchy as sinusitis or the common cold
