Marquis de Lafayette aristocratic “hero of the two worlds” who moderates looked up to; led a revolutionary militia
Olympe de Gouges a journalist disappointed with the Declaration of the Rights of Man because it exclcuded women; she demanded equal Rights and was imprisoned then executed for her resistance
Marie Antoinette Austrian-born queen of France, married to Louis XVI, who led an extravagant lifestyle which resulted in lack of favoritism of her by the people
Émigrés nobles, clergy, and others who fled France due to fears of the revolution; their fleeing to other countries only fueled the ideas and spread of revolution
Republic government ruled by elected representatives instead of a monarch; form of government demanded by the sans-culottes
Sans culottes translates to “without pants” and refers to the men who wore long pants versus the traditional knee-length britches of the time
Jacobins a revolutionary political club made up of mostly middle-class lawyers and intellectuals; used pamphlets and newspapers to advance the republican cause; later set out to erase all traces of the old order of the monarchy
