Defn Psychosis Gross impairment in perception of reality and ability to communicate / interact with others
Schizophrenia is characterized by: bizarre delusions, altered perceptions, inappropriate emotional responses; sense of reality is distorted;
Schizophrenia Dx criteria Sxs >6 months; 1 month with at least 2 positive or negative sxs; functional deterioration
Stage of Schizophrenia Prodromal (precedes onset by 1 yr, gradual behav changes & withdrawing); active (positive sxs, delusions, AVH, disorganized thought); residual (pos sxs subside, neg/deficit sxs develop)
Schizophrenia negative sxs = Flat & inappropriate affect; apathy; alogia; anhedonia; inattention; withdrawal
Types of Schizophrenia Paranoid; Disorganized; Catatonic; Undifferentiated
Disorder characterized by combination of sxs of both schizophrenia and mood/affective disorder = Schizoaffective disorder
Definition of Brief Psychotic Disorder Sudden onset at least 1 positive sxs of psychosis (delusion, hallucination, disorganized speech); sxs last >1 day, less than 30 days; often in personality disorder
Defn Delusional Disorder Non-bizarre delusion present >1 month; minimal deterioration in personality/function
Delusional Disorder types: Grandiose, Jealous, Persecutory, Somatic, Erotomanic, Mixed
