The Cold War

TermDefinition
Communism An economic and political system in which government owns all businesses, farms, homes, and most other property.
Democratic The political system in which people vote for their leaders and have a real voice in the law making process.
Domination The exercise of control or influence over someone or something, or the state of being controlled.
Financial Aid A grant or loan to help someone meet their expenses.
Instability The state of being unpredictable.
League of Nations An international organization established after World War 1 under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles.
Marshall Plan The American effort to help rebuild Europe after World War 2.
Military Aid To assist a country or its people in its defense.
Occupation The action of being kept by a military force.
Partitioned To divide into parts.
Self-Government Government of a country by its own people.
Superpower A country that has such a powerful influence in world affairs that it plays a role in almost every important international conflict or crisis.
Truman Plan An American policy to provide aid to Greece and Turkey.
United Nations An international peacekeeping organization formed at the end of World War 2.
Blockade The act to seal of a place to prevent someone or something from entering or leaving.
Capitalism An economic and political system in which people can own businesses, homes, and other property.
Cold War The period of tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
Containment The U.S. policy of trying to prevent the spread of communism.
Dictatorial A person who has total power to rule a country as they see it.
Domino Theory The fear that if a country becomes communist countries around it will become communist.
Ideology A system of ideas, mostly economic or political related.
Intervention The action of intervening.
Nato A military alliance of nations.
Stalemate A position counting as a draw.
Warsaw Pact A military alliance of communist nations.
